Using FrontPage to password protect directories
You can control access to certain sections of your Web site by requiring visitors to enter a user ID and password before they can view a page. Microsoft FrontPage enables you to assign user IDs and passwords to selected directories (known in FrontPage as "sub-webs").
If you are using FrontPage to create and upload your site, you should not password protect directories using the .htaccess method of protecting directories. For details, see Password protecting web directories.
To use FrontPage to password protect a directory:
- From within FrontPage, log in to your Web server.
- Create the directory you want to password protect.
- Right-click the new directory and select Convert to Web. Click Yes when prompted to confirm.
- With the "sub web" selected, on the Tools menu select Security > Permissions. The Permissions dialog box appears.
- Select the Use unique permissions for this web option and then click Apply.
- Select the Users tab.
- Select the Only registered users have browse access option.
- Click Add. Enter a user name and password for accessing this directory and then confirm the password.
- Select the permission to grant to this user name.
- Click OK.
- Repeat steps 8 through 10 for each user name and password you want to create. When you are finished, click OK on the Permissions dialog box.
